Curator Valerie Connor will discuss with artists Tina O’Connell and Neal White the role of amateur and community museums and archives. While public attention usually fixes on larger museums and art centres, local museums constitute a rich, mostly untapped network for artistic interaction and participation. This talk will take the collaborative practice of Tina O’Connell and Neal White as a starting point to consider the roles of artists, curators and commissioners in supporting and drawing energy from the enthusiast museum
Connor is freelance curator of contemporary art and a member of the advisory board of PhotoIreland and the advisory panel of the National Irish Visual Arts Library. Recently she worked on Still, We Work, a commissioned project she originally curated for the National Women’s Council of Ireland. Along with Ruairí Ó Cuív, she is currently curating the GPO Witness History Public Art Commissions. She is co-editor of Local Authority with Daniel Jewesbury, a book of critical essays on European public art commissioning strategies, and has been, among others, curator for Ireland at the Venice and São Paulo Biennales, visual arts director at Project Arts Centre (Dublin) and curator of Tulca Festival of Visual Art.
